Q: Do I need to be a jewellery designer to submit?
A: No. We welcome CAD designs from everyone as long as you have a love of fine jewellery. Occasionally we will run a design contest that accepts 2D as well as 3D designs.
Q: What kind of files do I need to enter a design campaign?
A: We ask that you send us:
- The relevant .STL files and 3D files needed for the manufacturing of your design.
- Up to four 3D renders of your design – showing the final product (i.e. closed prongs and stones set). You will be asked to choose a main image.
- We encourage you to create a 3D animation of your main image. Statistics prove by allowing customers to preview jewellery in 3D – they are more likely to buy.
Q: Can I suggest material choices for my design?
A: Yes. All Designers are asked to submit a ‘Brief’ along with their CAD design. This is a short description of the materials you would ideally like to see your piece made from, i.e. precious metal, gemstones, and where applicable the preferred finish.
Q: Do I have to share my inspiration behind the design?
A: We recommend you do. The story behind your design gives insight into you as a designer and will encourage a loyal customer base that may want to collect your pieces. People are investing in you and your story as a designer.
Q: How many designs can I submit per campaign?
A: You can submit up to 3 designs. We ask that your designs reflect closely the theme of the campaign you have chosen.
Q: Are all designs automatically published?
A: All designs will appear on the site unless they are deemed as having design flaws that would prevent them from being worn. Please read Common Decline Reasons to avoid disappointment.
Q: Can I re-submit my design after it has been rejected?
A: Yes you can. If you make the necessary corrections to your design to make them eligible for the campaign you may resubmit them.
Q: Are the design campaigns open for international applicants?
A: Yes, this is indeed an international design competition, meaning that the competition is open for applicants both nationally (from UK) and internationally (World). You can join from any country and there are no restrictions on the nationalities of the applicants.
Q: Can I participate with hand drafting images?
A: Usually you must submit a CAD design. If you need help creating a Cad design why not contact us to hire a freelance designer.
Q: I am a designer and I also have a company. Shall I join the competition as a designer or as a design company?
A: We recommend you join as a company to show your previous experience and extend your business.
Q: I am part of a design team – can we join the competition as a team?
A: Yes – two heads are can be better than one! We encourage design teams to join our contests.
Q: Can I join with a product that has already won another competition?
A: Yes, you can join with products that have already been submitted or won other competitions; you can join with already awarded designs and products.
Common Decline Reasons:
- Fails to reflect campaign theme. We understand our Campaign may not have influenced your creative process when you conceived the piece. It may be a future Campaign would better reflect your inspiration. By all means re-submit.
- Needs more work. Your design is declined because we feel that your design can be modified to better reflect your inspiration. You need to do more work to bring your design up to a higher standard of a winning entry.
- Poor visibility / image quality. Your design resolution is not sufficiently clear. Please submit in the format requested.
- Copyright. Your design is declined because it contains copyrighted material. Copying designs from your peers defeats the whole purpose of this website. Historical references are of course no longer under copyright and some of our Campaigns will draw from these.
Q: Who decides the winning design?
A: Winning designs are selected based on the following criteria:
- Reflection of campaign: theme based on colour, mood-board and current trends.
- Level of popularity: based on the number of votes received.
- Number of orders placed of the item during the campaign.
Q: Can a Design with fewer votes be selected instead of another design with more votes?
A: Yes. If you have the most votes, but do not have sufficient pre-orders to trigger production, you cannot be considered the winner.
Q: How many winning designs per campaign?
A: There are no fixed numbers of winners. We love great designs and would like to manufacture them if the selection criteria is fulfilled.
Q. How long is the voting period?
A: Voting period usually lasts for 3 weeks in total. It runs concurrently with the campaign submission for the first 2 weeks and ends 1 week after the campaign’s closing date to ensure that every design has a minimum voting time of 1 weeks.
Q: What do I get if I win?
A: You will be rewarded the cash prize (if offered) and 10% of gross profit (i.e. revenue less production costs). The more pieces sold, the higher your financial reward. So start promoting your designs now!
You also will receive Gem Privé’s in-house PR services. We do many forms of online marketing to promote our website and your products including Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), Search Engine Marketing (SEM), Social Media Marketing on Facebook and Twitter, Pinterest and Polyvore, as well as email marketing. We are also active in online and offline PR and events.
Q: Do I own the intellectual property of my winning design?
A: In submitting your design, you grant Gem Privé the exclusive rights to reproduce your design, but you maintain the copyright. If you do not gain production, the rights and interests will be reassigned to you. If you win, you enjoy all the benefits of being represented by Gem Privé and will earn 10% of all the profits generated by your design. Please refer to Terms and Conditions for more details.
Q: What happens if my design is not chosen as a winner?
A: Definitely try again. The more designs you submit, the higher the chance of winning. Also keep in mind that your CAD will be stored in your profile so that you can build an online portfolio to share with potential employers, retailers and our online community. Your design may be ahead of its time!
Q: What is pre-ordering?
A: When you pre-order, you place an order for an item that has not yet been produced. Based on the sample preview, we invite you to pledge your interest by pre-ordering the design.
Q: Why do we have pre-ordering?
A: Pre-ordering empowers the online community to be the buyer and kick start production of your favourite designs. This collective power then allows us to leverage economies of scale and ensure that unique designs are available at affordable prices.
Q: Why should I pre-order?
A: Kickstart design talent: Most importantly, you get to pick what we sell and put pieces into production. We believe that jewellery is as exciting to create as it is to wear!

Reserve your piece: Pre-ordering is the sure-fire way to reserve your favourite pieces. We manufacture our designs in limited quantity and they do run out of stock quickly.
Q: Can I cancel my pre-order?
A: No. Once an order has been placed, it cannot be cancelled unless the shipment is unavoidably delayed. In this case, we will do our best to cancel the order if requested.
Q: How long will it take for me to receive my order?
As all pieces are made to order expect approximately 3/4 weeks between the date you place your order and the date that the product is ready for shipment.

Q: Where is Gem Privé located?
A: We are located in London, England, most of our jewellery is proudly made in the United Kingdom.
Q: Do you have stores?
Currently, we only sell online, which allows us to offer exceptional value. Winning designs will be showcased at
various jewellery events throughout the year.
Q: Do you have the piece I’m looking at in stock?
A: In order to reduce waste and save on operating costs all of our beautiful fine jewellery is made to order and we don’t have any designs in stock.
Q: Where is your jewellery made?
The majority of the jewellery is made by the finest craftsmen in London. For the more complex designs we engage with specialist craftsmen in Amercia to ensure we never have to compromise the integrity of your designs.
Q: Do you have a warranty on your jewellery?
A: Yes, we have a one-year warranty on the workmanship of all our jewellery. The warranty covers quality of our workmanship but is void if another jeweller resizes or modifies the piece.
Q: Do you ship to PO Boxes?
A: No. We can only deliver to you, your home or place of business, as all deliveries require a signature.
Q: Is my package insured? Do I have to be home to receive my package?
- All packages we send are insured. A signature is required on delivery of orders.
- You’ll receive an email that the package is on its way.
- Please complete the order and delivery form.
- Call us to make any changes to the delivery arrangements.
Q: What if I don’t know my ring size?
A: We have a plastic ring sizer that we’d be happy to send you. We strongly advise you find out your ring size before ordering. Gem Privé offers a resizing service for a small fee the cost of shipping. However, resizing can take three to six weeks and we know you won’t want to be without your ring for that long: we’d love to help you get it right the first time!
Q: Can I have my jewellery engraved?
A: Yes. If you would like to engrave the inside of a ring, you can do it on the product page or in your cart before checking out. Engraving the inside of a ring is a free service. For other engraving requests on pendants or the outside of rings, call Gem Privé Customer Care on +44 (0)207 117 2614 and we’ll be happy to help you.
Q: What is a karat?
A: Precious Metals: One karat, when referred to gold, is 1/24th by weight. 18 karat gold is 18/24th or 750 parts pure gold out of 1000. The higher the karat value, the higher the proportion of gold in relation to the base metal content. Pure gold is, therefore, 24 carat.
Q: What are the other metals in your alloys?
A: Gem Privé uses sterling silver which is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. Gem Privé also uses Argentium 960 silver, which is 96% silver and nickel-free. Argentium is more durable and resists tarnish longer than traditional sterling silver because it has germanium in the alloy in addition to the traditional copper. The silver in Argentium is guaranteed to be recycled.
Our 18K gold is 75% gold. The composition of the rest of the alloy varies a little but generally our yellow gold is blended with silver, copper, and zinc. Rose gold has a greater proportion of copper to give it a rosy hue. Gem Privés white gold is alloyed with palladium or nickel and silver, copper, and zinc and is plated with rhodium, a platinum group metal, to brighten the white colour.
Platinum and palladium are both 95% pure and hypoallergenic. For both platinum and palladium, the other 5% of the alloy is composed of other platinum group metals: ruthenium or iridium or a combination of the two, which varies from design to design.
Q: Will your silver tarnish?
A: Yes. All silver eventually does tarnish. We use Rhodium plates sterling silver which resists tarnishing five times longer than traditional sterling silver but all silver eventually tarnishes. How long it will take depends on the chemistry of your skin and whether you live near the ocean. Fortunately people have been wearing silver for thousands of years and there are lots of great silver polishes available for the day when your silver does need some polishing. The good news? The more you wear it, the longer it will take to tarnish.
Q: Are your metals ethically sourced and environmentally friendly?
A: We do everything we can to use only recycled and fair trade precious metals. But some findings like earring posts and chains are not currently available with recycled metals. And at this time, although our gold is recycled, we can’t guarantee that the other metals in our gold alloys, like copper, are recycled. If you choose platinum, palladium, or our sterling silver, we can assure you that your jewellery will be a minimum of 95% recycled in origin. We continue to work with our suppliers toward a future of 100% traceable precious metals.
Q: What is a carat?
A: Gemstones: A carat, when applied to gemstones means a weight of 1/5th (0.2) of a metric gram. It is conventionally divided into 100 parts (called points) 100 points = 1 carat. A half carat stone weighs 50 points -sometimes written 0.50 carat or ½ carat.
Q: Are your gems natural?
A: Gem Privé only sells natural gemstones. After you place your order, we hand select each dazzling high-quality gem to perfectly complete your design.
Q: What quality are your gemstones?
We us different grades of gem according to our price ranges:
Flawless:- (IF- FL)
The FL grade denotes that the gem has no inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification.
The IF grade denotes the the gem has no inclusions visible under 10x magnification, only small blemishes on the diamond surface.
This is the highest grade of gem as they are rare to find, and posses the finest qualities in the ‘four C’s’ : cut, colour, clarity, and carat.
Superfine:- (VS -VS2 – SI1)
This grade denotes that the gem is clean, well cut & polished, has lively colour with consistency and appropriation.
AAA:-(SI1 – SI2)
This grade denotes that the gem is clean, well cut & polished, has lively colour but poses variation in colour consistency.
Q: What grade are your diamonds?
A: All of Gem Privé diamonds are S12 or better. Diamonds over 1/3 carat have GIA reports confirming quality.
Q: Can I get a grading certificate for my gemstone?
A: Our more valuable gemstones and diamonds come with certificates from the GIA (Gemological Institute of America- the world’s foremost authority in gemology) and for a fee Gem Privé can provide Certification and Insurance Valuation for your jewellery. We absolutely stand behind the quality of the gems we sell.
